A very senior yoga guru once said:
“Yoga does not transform the way we see things, it transforms the person who sees.”
This is pretty true in the case of Sathyapriya, founder and managing director of Shree Shankara Yoga Shala. Yoga not only transformed her spiritually, physically and mentally, but also inspired her to make the knowledge and the path of yoga accessible to people of all ages and walks of life.
A homemaker, coming from an accounting background, Sathyapriya never imagined that she would walk down this path. But when she took a break from her job as a CA and a partner in an investment consultancy, to do something on her own, she was too stressed. Between the stress of starting something new and looking after her son who had major breathing issues, Sathyapriya’s health was taking a toll.
This is when she joined Akshar Academy and was introduced to the practice of yoga. With regular practice, she witnessed a major transformation – she was a happier person, full of confidence, mentally relaxed and was thinking clearly. Being inspired by the way the practice of yoga helped her son and her condition, Sathyapriya made up her mind to start a yoga institute. And by the end of 2016, her dream of doing something on her own – having her own yoga institute came true. Finally, Shree Shankara Yoga Shala came into being.
But Sathyapriya’s enthusiasm was urging her to do more and didn’t want her to stop at just this. She was now clear that she wanted to reach out to the masses. From a 6-year-old child to a 30-year-old adult to a 60-year-old senior person – she wanted everyone to reap the benefits of yoga.
Hence today, Shree Shankara Yoga Shala has become one-stop-shop for all activities meant for fitness, well-being and recreation – for people of all age groups and walks of life, regardless their status.
“Yoga is a healer, and I personally and highly recommend and encourage everyone to walk down this path. But not everyone is into yoga. And not all practices are meant for everyone. Hence, I decided to customize classes and activities for everyone to reap the benefits. Apart from the regular yoga classes for regular yoga practitioners, there are special classes for senior citizens, and those with special conditions.
This is only to ensure that children don’t get bored and can enjoy something new every day. I wanted to make sure that children find these activities enjoyable and not a punishment.”
Talking about her brainchild project – Shree Shankara Kala Kendra, Sathyapriya says:
Well, this is just the beginning – Sathyapriya’s plan does not end here. In the near future, she plans to reach out to the entire society and make Shree Shankara Yoga Shala accessible to even those people who cannot afford spending. She wants to take all these activities and services even to the orphanages and old age homes.
And thus, Sathyapriya’s and her academy’s journey continues….
